This is a departure for us from the real sound of wood. We have teamed up with an Indonesian maker to produce the Bucara fibreglass Festival range of African percussion. Rather than use the native hardwoods, we have taken the true dimensions of the traditional Djembe and manufactured them using GRP, with traditional roping and goat heads. The results have been stunning. Loud, light drums which react in a similar way to wood drums and are well priced, colourful and durable.

These handmade drums are from Ghana, made for us in conjunction with a Fair Trade organisation. They are traditionally carved from the Tweeneboa tree (African Cedar), and skinned with goat or cow, depending on the instrument.
The Drums
Single Weave Djembes
The standard Djembe used all over Western Africa. Well-made with a big bass and sharp slap. Sizes 7", 9", 11", 13"

Double Weave professional Djembes: top of the range drums. Twice as much rope is used which means the drums hold their tuning really well, as well as having a great dynamic and tonal range. The weave around the top of the drum acts as a comfort curve. The relief carving is beautiful and unique to each drum. Sizes 9", 11", 13"

Kpanlogo: Part of a family of drums used in Ghana. Kpanlogo are usually skinned with antelope and played with the hand and a stick. Size 10"
Doum doum: Bucara make us three sizes of the traditional African bass drum - the doum doum. The three sizes each have a different place within the polyrhythms of African music, and have different names. Sizes: Kekeni 10" x 18", Sangbar 13" x 20.5", Dununba 16" X 23"
